The Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission (CSPDC), a regional planning organization located in Staunton, VA, and serving the local governments in the Central Shenandoah Region, has the following employment opportunity:

Transportation and Community Planner. The CSPDC seeks a qualified applicant for a full-time transportation and community planner to join our team. The position will provide expertise in planning and the administration of regional transportation and public transit planning programs. The CSPDC staffs two Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs); a rural transportation program covering five counties and two cities; a regional public transit program; and promotes bicycle and pedestrian modes for transportation, recreation, and tourism throughout the CSPDC region.

Responsibilities of the position include developing regional long-range plans, short-range transportation studies, and local comprehensive plans, writing and administering grants, preparing and submitting staff reports, and assisting member jurisdictions with local contract services. Duties also include organizing, staffing, and presenting at MPO meetings with federal, state, and local officials, and presenting to outside organizations on a variety of transportation-related topics. The qualified candidate will possess an effective knowledge of transportation and community planning processes, and regulations related to transportation programs and funding, including planning and programming for highways, bicycle and pedestrian modes, and public transit. Proficiency with travel demand and traffic modeling is desired.

Applicants should possess the ability to work as a member of a team, both in person and  remotely, independently manage planning projects and consultants, and form positive relationships working with local, state, and federal staff and the public. The position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office and ArcGIS. A master’s degree in planning or related field, and 2-5 years of experience is preferred (or an equivalent combination of education and work experience may be substituted). Salary:  $45,000 to $65,000, depending on qualifications.
