APA Virginia Board Statement on DEI April 11, 2025

April 2025 Statement from the APA Virginia Chapter Board on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

In recent months we have seen real pushback against diversity, equity and inclusion both nationwide and within some of our own communities here in Virginia. It is happening in classrooms, in government, and in public discourse. While some groups are scaling back or staying silent, the APA Virginia Chapter Board believes this is exactly the moment to speak out and step up.

We cannot build resilient communities without equity. We cannot talk about creating opportunity, access, or long-term impact without intentionally including and engaging those previously omitted. Diversity, equity and inclusion are not optional initiatives — they are essential components of good planning. It is part of how we make great communities for all.

Our Chapter’s Development Plan states clearly that this approach to planning is fundamental in reflecting our profession’s purpose and values. However, values are meaningless unless they become actions. That is the real opportunity before us now — not just to stay the course, but also to lead with purpose and conviction.

We are proud of the great progress we have made in recent years. At the same time, we recognize how easily momentum can fade — especially when outside pressure tells us to slow down, reword things, or shift focus. We do not believe that now is a time for us to lessen our efforts in this regard. We have laid the groundwork and now is the time that we must build on that foundation.

This Chapter has never shied away from a challenge. We have shown a willingness to engage in difficult conversations, reflect critically on our own actions, and hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards. We remain steadfast in our commitment to our mission — to empower Virginians to create great communities for all — and in order to achieve this; we must keep diversity, equity and inclusion a priority for our organization and our profession.

This moment calls for clarity, courage, and consistency. The Board of the Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association not only see our diverse members and communities, but we are proud to stand with you and to serve you. In order to do this, as an organization, we embrace diversity, equity and inclusion as fundamental to the planning profession and essential to build Virginia’s strongest communities.
